... the hot news story that circumcision reduces the risk of contracting HIV is not so hot. I wrote it in The Sunday Times seven years ago.

Actually this was suspected to be the case at least since the late eighties, see e.g.
Circumcision may protect against the AIDS virus. Science. 1989 Aug 4;245(4917):470-1.
