SAD and the Life of Keith
I am sitting here bathed in an unearthly glow. Seen from the street, I appear to be a saint in ecstasy. Yes, I have bought an anti-SAD light, a Lumie to be exact. I don't on the whole think Seasonal Affective Disorder really qualifies as a disease, but, in these darkening days, I do feel the lack of light. It seems to work. I have been feeling very wide awake since I bought it. This is not entirely a good thing as it is compounding my famous sleep problems. But, since I feel wide awake, it doesn't seem to matter. There is something of the Keith Richards approach to life in this and, not being Keith, it is likely that, in the near future, I shall fall down and sleep for several months. Or die. So, if, suddenly, only Nige blogs, that's what has happened.

I can just imagine you sitting ecstatically at your desk, gazing upwards longingly, your lips slightly parted and perhaps an arm raised in supplication. The good people of North Kensington will never have seen the like. And what an unusual way to spend a grey day like this one.

I take that as a sign I should buy one. I've been finding it hard to find energy to work since the beginning of November and I swear it's the fact it doesn't get light up here. It's 2pm and I've already got a light on.

I need one too. I'm supposed to give 150 revised pp. to an editor in a few days and I've done, oh, maybe 25 pages. Just can't seem to turn on my own ignition. And I know the SAD thing gets me because I grew up in the tropics and the darkening days were never a problem until I moved to the chilly (now snow covered) Northeastern U.S.A.

That's right Susan, our woeful productivity is the weather's fault. Nothing to do with the hours spent on blogs...

Believe me, Brit, I can waste time in all kinds of ways. Yesterday I dusted bookshelves and rearranged tomes. The day before that I spent hours chopping veg for a winter soup. I can always think of something else to do rather than what I *should* be doing. If someone knows of a good book on procrastination -- how to end it, that is -- please direct me to the title!

Susan, I know a really good book that helped me overcome procrastination.
I'll find it for you sometime...
