Golliwogs
Stephen Pollard and I have both been rendered speechless by shop displays of golliwogs. Mine was in a local seaside knick-knack/gew-gaw joint. I also discover a Gollyfest in the US. The supplier of the gollies in my shop do not list them on their site, so perhaps this is very old stock. Or are these things now acceptable? I think we should be told.

Golly! Perhaps in some instances it is possible for a symbol or artifact to be so blatently derogatory or disagreeable - anachronistically speaking, in particular - that it loses its power to offend and is considered just plain silly.

A couple of years ago I saw some on display in the window of a cheapy greetings card shop in the Staple Hill area of Bristol.
I was so surprised I actually went in and warned the lady that they might cause offense to passing shoppers. She looked blank. They were gone a week or so later, though. God knows who still makes them.

Golly, takes me back 40 years to my first week at primary school wednesfield wolverhampton. I was in bright sun shine, the play ground was huge but I was enjoying myself. Then another boy said ( I was one of two black boys in my year of around 50 or so kids ) "...there's a wog .." somehow things were never quite the same again.
